Starting An Embroidery Business

WHAT IS AN EMBROIDERY BUSINESS?

Have you ever seen caps or shirts that have a company logo stitched on them? More than likely it was done in an embroidery shop or from a home-based embroidery business. There are many types of embroidery done in a shop that aren’t just company logos. Some examples include patches, jackets, Christmas stockings and much, much more! You can also make items to sell at craft fairs, or set up the machine at local events.

NO TALENT NEEDED

Some of you may be thinking, ‘But I don’t sew!’. That doesn’t matter at all. You need absolutely no special skills for this business. Embroidery machines come with instructional manuals, videos and sometimes free classes on location. Anything you don’t know, you can learn on the internet. The very basics of machine embroidery are as follows:
1. Place an embroidery hoop, along with stabilizer on the item to be embroidered.
2. Connect the hoop to the embroidery machine.
3. Choose a design from your computer and send it to the machine.
4. Make sure the machine is loaded with the thread colors you want.
5. Press start on the embroidery machine and it does the rest for you.

MULTIPLE EXPANSION POSSIBILITIES

Many embroidery shops not only do embroidery, but have expanded to offer services like heat press, sublimation, alterations and mending, etc. Although you would need to know how to sew to do mending and alterations, the other aspects I mentioned can be learned in a few minutes! One embroidery shop I worked at also rented tuxedos, and printed photos on mugs.

HOME-BASED OR STOREFRONT

I have had two embroidery-based businesses. I ran both of them from a home-based office in my house. Embroidery shops I worked at previously were storefront businesses. Working from home allowed me to be around when my kids needed me, and to work whichever part of the day I wanted to.
